If you went looking for a free trial on Midjourney's website or Discord, you already know: there isn't one. The only way to try Midjourney without paying is through the Niji Journey mobile app. Everywhere else, it starts at $10/month.
That makes the plan choice matter from day one. Pay too little and you burn through Fast GPU hours mid-project. Pay too much and you subsidize capacity you never touch. This guide lays out exactly what each tier gives you, where the real limits bite, and which plan matches which kind of work.
The four plans at a glance
| | Basic | Standard | Pro | Mega | |---|---|---|---|---| | Monthly price | $10 | $30 | $60 | $120 | | Annual price | $8/mo ($96/yr) | $24/mo ($288/yr) | $48/mo ($576/yr) | $96/mo ($1,152/yr) | | Fast GPU time | 3.3 hr (200 min) | 15 hr | 30 hr | 60 hr | | Relax Mode (images) | No | Unlimited | Unlimited | Unlimited | | Relax Mode (SD video) | No | No | Unlimited | Unlimited | | HD video | No | Yes | Yes | Yes | | Concurrent Fast prompts | 3 | 3 | 12 | 12 | | Concurrent Relax prompts | -- | 3 | 3 | 3 | | Stealth Mode | No | No | Yes | Yes | | Extra GPU cost | $4/hr | $4/hr | $4/hr | $4/hr |
Annual billing saves 20% across every tier. That is the only discount -- there is no student plan, no bundle, no coupon.
Fast GPU vs Relax Mode
Every prompt you run on Midjourney uses GPU time. Fast Mode is priority processing: your job goes to the front of the queue. Relax Mode puts it in the shared pool, where it waits behind other users. The result is the same; the wait is longer.
Basic gives you 3.3 hours of Fast time per month and nothing else. When it runs out, you either buy more at $4/hour or wait until the billing cycle resets.
From Standard up, you get unlimited Relax Mode for images. That changes the equation entirely: you can experiment freely in Relax and save your Fast hours for final renders or tight deadlines. The 15 hours of Fast on Standard is enough for most individual creators who use Relax as their default.
Pro and Mega unlock unlimited Relax Mode for standard-definition video as well, not just images. If video generation is part of your workflow, this is the floor.
Video generation: where the tiers diverge
Basic has no video capability at all. Standard, Pro, and Mega can all generate HD video, but only Pro and Mega get unlimited SD video in Relax Mode.
In practice, this means Standard users pay Fast GPU time for every video they generate. At $4/hour for extra time, a heavy video workflow on Standard gets expensive fast. Pro absorbs that cost with Relax, making it the practical entry point for regular video work.
Stealth Mode
Stealth Mode keeps your prompts and outputs private. Without it, everything you create on Midjourney is visible to other users on the platform.
This is only available on Pro ($60/month) and Mega ($120/month). If you work on client projects, unreleased brand material, or anything you cannot have in a public gallery, there is no workaround on the lower tiers.
The free trial is gone (almost)
Midjourney used to offer a free trial on Discord. That ended, and it has not come back on the website either. The only remaining free trial is on the Niji Journey mobile app -- Midjourney's anime-focused sister product. It gives you a taste of the engine, but the style library and feature set are not the same as the main platform.
If you want to use Midjourney proper, you pay from the first prompt.
Which plan for which use case
Basic ($10/month) -- You generate images occasionally, maybe a few times a week. You do not need video. You do not care if your work is public. The 200 minutes of Fast GPU is enough for light, deliberate use. It is not enough for exploration sessions where you iterate on a prompt 30 times.
Standard ($30/month) -- You generate images regularly and want to experiment without watching a timer. Unlimited Relax for images means you can iterate freely. The 15 hours of Fast cover the moments you need speed. HD video is available but costs Fast time, so this plan works if video is occasional, not constant.
Pro ($60/month) -- You need Stealth Mode, or you generate video regularly, or both. Unlimited SD video in Relax makes video experimentation viable without surprise costs. 30 hours of Fast and 12 concurrent Fast prompts support professional volume. Companies making more than $1M/year in gross revenue are required to use Pro or Mega.
Mega ($120/month) -- You need everything Pro offers but at double the Fast GPU capacity. 60 hours is for teams or individuals running heavy production pipelines where 30 hours is genuinely not enough. The feature set is identical to Pro; you are buying time, not features.
Annual vs monthly: the only saving that exists
Every plan offers a 20% discount on annual billing. On Basic, that takes you from $10 to $8/month ($96/year). On Mega, from $120 to $96/month ($1,152/year).
The question is simple: have you used Midjourney for three consecutive months without a break? If yes, switch to annual -- the savings are real and the commitment is low relative to the tool's utility. If you are still figuring out whether Midjourney fits your workflow, stay monthly until you know.
Extra GPU time
When Fast hours run out, you can buy more at $4/hour on any plan. This is the same price regardless of tier. There is no bulk discount and no rollover -- unused hours from one month do not carry to the next.
If you find yourself buying extra hours two months in a row, you are on the wrong plan. The upgrade to the next tier almost always costs less than the extra hours would.
The bottom line
Midjourney's pricing is straightforward once you strip away the feature grid. The real decision points are three:
- Do you need Relax Mode? If yes, Standard minimum.
- Do you need Stealth or regular video? If yes, Pro minimum.
- Do you need more than 30 Fast hours? If yes, Mega.
Everything else -- concurrent prompts, annual discounts, extra GPU pricing -- is detail that matters only after you answer those three questions. Start there.
