ChatGPT Plans in 2026: Free vs Go vs Plus vs Pro -- What You Actually Get

ChatGPT has four individual plans. The free one does more than most people realize. The paid ones unlock features that matter for specific use cases, not for everyone.
Here is the breakdown as of October 2026, from the official pricing page.
Free -- $0/month
Unlimited text chats with GPT-6. Limited messages with uploads, limited image creation, limited voice chats, limited deep research, and limited Codex access.
The context window for GPT Instant is 27K tokens, roughly 12 pages of text input.
This is enough for everyday questions, writing help, brainstorming, and casual research. Most people who use ChatGPT a few times a week do not need more.
What you do not get: advanced reasoning models (GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol), Sites, scheduled tasks, or expanded memory.
Go -- $8/month
Everything in Free plus more messages with tools, more uploads, more image creation, more voice chats, and longer memory.
The context window doubles to 54K tokens (about 40 pages of text input). You also get voice with video, scheduled tasks, and the ability to create and share Plugins.
The catch: this plan may include ads. OpenAI says so on the pricing page.
Go makes sense if you hit the free limits regularly but do not need advanced reasoning models. The $8 buys you headroom, not new capabilities.
Plus -- $20/month
Everything in Go plus the features that separate casual use from serious work.
Advanced reasoning models with GPT-6, including GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra. Expanded Codex usage. Projects, scheduled tasks, and custom GPTs. Sites (the website builder). Image generation with Thinking. Interactive tables and charts. Deep research without limits. Early access to new features.
The context window stays at 54K tokens for GPT Instant, but the reasoning models get 256K (about 320 pages of input).
Plus is for people who use ChatGPT as a daily work tool -- writing, coding, research, analysis. The reasoning models and Codex alone justify the jump from Go.
Pro -- from $100/month
Everything in Plus, scaled up. Three usage tiers to choose from. Pro reasoning powered by GPT-6 Astra. Longer Codex and ChatGPT Work sessions. Dot, the always-on agent. Unlimited and faster image creation. Maximum deep research. Maximum memory and context.
The GPT Instant context window jumps to 128K tokens (about 250 pages of input). The reasoning context reaches 400K.
Two features are exclusive to Pro: Dots (personal AI agents) and ChatGPT Space.
Pro is for power users and professionals who spend hours a day inside ChatGPT and need the highest limits, fastest responses, and agent capabilities.
Which plan do you need?
Start from Free. If you run into limits more than twice a week, try Go. If you need reasoning models, Codex, or Sites, go Plus. If you need agents, maximum context, or you live inside ChatGPT, go Pro.
The free plan with unlimited GPT-6 text is more capable than any paid ChatGPT plan from two years ago. Most people start there and only upgrade when they have a specific reason.
